The Marchesi Fumanelli family has been cultivating grapes and crafting esteemed wines in Valpolicella since 1470. The Squarano estate, nestled in the core of Valpolicella on a gentle hilltop surrounded by vineyards, cherry, and cypress trees, was constructed in the seventeenth century by the noble Fumanelli family. The estate still boasts inscriptions and archaeological remnants, including traces of a Roman temple dedicated to the Goddess Flora, constructed over a millennium ago when the first vines were planted. Since 1998, the ancient cellars, meticulously restored, once again house oak barrels for aging classical Valpolicella wines. The barrel aromas capture the essence of the local hills with hints of cypresses and cherries, embodying the colors, traditions, and culture of the region.
Situated in the heart of classical Valpolicella, the Squarano estate is home to the Marchesi Fumanelli family, who have been cultivating grapes and crafting wines since 1470. As one of the largest and most historic family-owned wineries in the region, Fumanelli combines traditional and modern techniques within their ancient property walls, eight miles from Verona. Under the leadership of Armando Fumanelli, the current Proprietor and CEO, the winery seamlessly blends tradition and innovation to authentically express the distinctive terroir. Armando, who joined the winery in 1998 after completing a Political Science degree in Switzerland and working for the Italian Embassy in East African and Middle Eastern countries, has overseen the restructuring and replanting of cellars and vineyards, restoring the Squarano Estate to its past splendour. Marchesi Fumanelli wines stand as the epitome of pedigree and provenance in the heart of Valpolicella.
