Among our greatest discoveries last year is this incredible wine estate from the Montalcino region of Tuscany. Founded in 1997, this estate is run by Francesco Illy, an interesting gentleman who is obsessed with purity, quality, and nature. Podere le Ripi is unlike anything we have ever seen. An ancient property untouched by human intervention (it seems), a 133-acre estate with hundreds of olive trees, surrounded by forest and wild vegetation.
Illy is a nature photographer and author who comes from a renowned coffee background, who's grandfather, also named Francesco (the inventor of Espresso), founded Illy coffee in 1933, the family continues to create some of the finest espresso available. With a family immersed in the fine coffee, tea and chocolate business, it’s easy to see how Francesco Illy wanted to create a new family specialty—this time, grown under the Tuscan sun.
'...there is no denying the amount of pleasure there is to be found in a bottle of Podere Le Ripi Brunello. Francesco Illy proves to be at the top of his game...' - Eric Guido, Vinous Media, Nov 2020
Blessed with vineyards on both the east and west sides of Montalcino, Podere Le Ripi produces terroir-driven Brunello di Montalcino wines from three single vineyards. The estate has been biodynamic since 2012, a project spearheaded by winemaker Sebastian Nasello.
