Señorio de Astobiza is a small, family-owned and operated winery in the Txakoli de Alava D.O. of Spain. Named after a portion of the mountains nearby, Astobiza is a young bodega with an old family history in winemaking (thus the Señorio in the name). Xabier Abando's memories of growing up in the vineyards during the 1950's while his father was making wine helped carry him through his dad’s untimely death when he was only fifteen. His father’s passion and love of the land gave him the motivation and dreams to one day create a bodega of his own.
In 1996, Xabier’s dreams began to take shape when he acquired an estate near the town of Okendo, and he began planting his first 2 hectares of vines. Years later, at the tender age of 68 and after his vines started producing quality fruit, Xabier built his bodega in 2008 to coincide with his first vintage of wine. Now with his son-in-law Jon Zubeldia, and the help of enologist Ana MartÍn, Xabier is making beautiful Txakolí from his organically farmed estate that would have made his father proud.
