Tasting Notes

"The art of Rosé is the art of understatement, the art of creating a drinkability so complete that it almost contrives to efface its own origins. Almost. Yet it's a mark of the greatness of this rosé that those origins do linger - namely the distinguished clay-marl terraces of Bandol, and the contentment of the Mourvedre which so relishes growing there. This is a deeper salmon than many of its peers, with scintillatingly peachy-floral fruits. The origins come through most clearly in the palate, with its sustained shaping structure from those contented Mourvedre vines. The Grenache, meanwhile, has brought wealth and fleshy Cinsault charm. It adds up to an irresistible whole."

The Producer

Domaine La Suffrene

The Suffrène, located in the Bandol AOC, is above all a family estate combining tradition and modernity. The vines have been in the family for over a century. It was after the war that Mr. Piche, a young farmer, began to develop the vineyard. He is one of the pioneers of the Bandol appellation. His grandson, Cédric Gravier, then took over the farm in 1996, and built the cellar as it exists today. As of that date, he manages the production and marketing of his wines.

Bandol AOC is considered to be some of the best Terroir there is in Provence when it comes to producing Rosé. Many would suggest that there is no better Terroir for Rosé in Provence than that of Bandol. I would be among those to agree with this suggestion.

The Bandol area is one of the most famous vineyards of Provence. It owes its reputation to a very favourable microclimate, and to its king variety “Le Mourvedre”. The designation Bandol is one of the oldest protected designation of origin (AOC) in France, it was recognized in 1941. The quality of the wines is also due to very restrictive specifications with low yields, harvest by hand allowing a rigorous selection of grapes. Our very fragmented vineyard, often in hillsides, and cut in a goblet, implies a large manual work, respecting the traditions of our Appellation.
