The Minuto family has owned the Moccagatta vineyards in the town of Barbaresco since the second half of the 1800s, when Giovanni Minuto became the proprietor and patriarch. Luigi, Giovanni's son, began the family tradition of turning the harvest into wine in 1913. He later passed on his life's work to his sons, Lorenzo and Mario, in the early 1950s.
Remaining a family affair to this day, Moccagatta remains dedicated to both the terroir of their homeland and the finesse required by Barbaresco. All the vineyards are cultivated organically, and the wines, aged in a modernized winery, reflect the history of the land and its caretakers.
Moccagatta actively participates in the EU regulation promoting low-environmental-impact methods and enhancing the preservation of natural resources in rural areas through agricultural and environmental measures. Integrated insect and disease control is implemented using various methods, including sexual confusion and strategically placed birdhouses in the vineyards. Sulphur and copper-based products are applied at minimal dosage levels, and only organic fertilizers (manure) from traditional cattle farms without concentrated feed are used. The rows of vines are interspersed with cover crops (grass cover) to maintain the ecological balance.
