Tasting Notes

"Camphor, rose, cedar and ripe red berry aromas come to the forefront on this beautiful Barbaresco. Smooth and elegantly structured, the focused palate features ripe Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and white pepper alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced."

96 Points - Kerin O'Keefe, Sept 2022

"High expectations for this new release coming from such a highly lauded vintage, the 2019 does not disappoint. Bold and punchy from start to finish, the nose boasts a multi-layered melange of lavender, violets, ripe red and black cherries, botte oak spice, potpourri and perfumed bathroom soaps. Seductive and muscular, the palate is as bold as it gets with a rich vein of textured mineral tannins over dense, sweet pithy berry fruits before the finish is overwhelmed by a chalky, spicy, stony minerality. This is a very serious piece of kit with high aspirations and serious intent that is sure to seduce serious Piedmont Nebbiolo collectors."

95 Points - Greg Sherwood MW, November 2022

"There is a more pronounced mineral and delicately spiced character to the 2019 Barbaresco, with notes of wet asphalt and kirsch and vibrant purity. It has elegant concentration, with fine coiled tannins in its hints of tea leaves, bergamot, and ripe wild raspberry, and has a more pronounced structure, This is a fantastic expression."

The Producer

Produttori del Barbaresco

Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were primarily used to produce Barolo wine or were simply labeled as 'Nebbiolo di Barbaresco.' However, in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, the headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a resident of Barbaresco, took a significant step. He established the first cooperative, known as 'Cantine Sociali,' bringing together nine owners of Barbaresco vineyards to collectively produce wine in the local castle he owned. Cavazza possessed a keen understanding of the distinct qualities of Nebbiolo grapes grown in different areas of Barolo and Barbaresco. For the first time, he acknowledged these differences on the wine labels.

The 'Cantine Sociali' unfortunately closed in the 1930s due to fascist economic regulations. However, in 1958, the priest of the Barbaresco village recognized the survival challenges faced by small vineyard owners. In response, he united nineteen small growers to establish the Produttori del Barbaresco. The initial three vintages were crafted in the church basement before a winery was constructed in the square where the Produttori is currently situated.

Reunited, these small growers continued Domizio Cavazza's legacy, focusing solely on producing Barbaresco wine. They not only elevated the reputation of the wine but also enhanced the standing of the village. Barbaresco's proud history and the dedication of its founders have positioned the Produttori as one of the premier producers in a renowned winemaking region. As noted by Robert M. Parker, Jr. in The Wine Advocate on February 28, 1990, the Produttori ‘continues to set some of the highest standards of winemaking for any cooperative in the world.’
