Tasting Notes

Fresh raspberries, dried cherries, and fainter notes of darker berries.  Florals like violets and roses develop with a little breathing time, as do the mineral elements of tar and iron, but the tertiary characteristics are the true delights here.  Leather, tobacco, earth, and licorice ratchet up their intensity for lovely savory components among the fruits.  On the palate there are dried cherries and plump raspberries, followed by hints of chocolate flakes interspersed among dried violets.  Leather, tobacco leaf, truffle, and licorice provide a mixture of chewy and cooling flavors that starkly contrast against the piquant notes of iron and slightly muted tar.  Acid is plentiful but not overly aggressive, cozying up instead with the soft, plush tannins to balance a medium full body with a velvety texture.  Long and clean on the finish, notes of violets, raspberries and iron minerality go on and on.

The Producer

Scarpa

Few can rival Scarpa for not only the stature of their work, but the dizzying number of famous wines they have made and continue to make since the mid 18th century. Scarpa was among the founders of the appellations of Barbaresco and Barolo. There are not a lot of wines that can match up in quality with the wines from Scarpa. SCARPA was founded in the second half of the eighteenth century by a Venetian migrant, Antonio Scarpa. Still bearing his name, the cellar was handed over to a family from Nizza Monferrato in the late 40's. Mario Pesce, was a young oenologist then who acquired SCARPA after his studies in Burgundy and Alsace and led the cellar throughout its success over the decades. Those are the years when the rules were set: excellent quality, sustainable agriculture and traditional winemaking methods. This is the benchmark to which Scarpa still stands by today.
