Pico Maccario, a specialist in Barbera wines, is situated in the town of Mombaruzzo at the heart of Piedmont's Barbera d’Asti DOCG. In 1997, brothers Pico and Vitaliano established the Pico Maccario brand, marking a shift from four generations of supplying family grapes to other producers.
The Barbera d’Asti DOCG is nestled in the core of Piedmont, Italy. Mombaruzzo, located approximately an hour southeast of Asti, houses the Pico Maccario winery. Here, the Maccario brothers possess a rare expanse of 70 contiguous hectares, with 60 dedicated to Barbera and the remainder planted with a mix of international and traditional Piemontese grape varieties. The vineyards, at an average elevation of 180 meters, sit on clay-based soils. Pico Maccario attributes the excellence of their wines to a significant number of old vines, some surpassing 80 years.
Pico Maccario consistently invests substantial resources in technological innovation and vineyard research. They firmly believe that cutting-edge technology contributes to achieving the highest quality. The estate is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including stainless-steel tanks with computerized controls for monitoring temperature throughout the vinification process. Various Barbera wines are crafted, each undergoing distinct aging processes. Lavignone, the estate's flagship, matures exclusively in stainless steel tanks, while Tre Roveri ages in large casks known as ‘botti grandi,’ and Epico in French oak barriques. Purity and balance are the guiding principles for every Pico Maccario wine.
