The Producer
Giacomo Fenocchio
For over five generations, the Fenocchio family has been crafting wine from their vineyards in Monforte d'Alba since 1894. Initially, most of their wine was sold locally until 1964 when the dynamic and ambitious Giacomo Fenocchio assumed control of the estate. In his pursuit of creating the finest Barolo wines, he acquired prime vineyard plots in Cannubi and nearby Castellero. Nevertheless, his primary focus remained on what he fondly referred to as the heart of the Barolo region, Bussia.
In April of 1989, Giacomo sadly passed away, leaving his young son Claudio to shoulder the responsibilities of managing both the farming and winemaking aspects of the estate. This was a challenging period for the Barolo wine industry, as many producers were advocating for a 'new way' of producing Barolo with great commercial success. However, Claudio remained steadfast in adhering to traditional methods. He continued to make wines using time-honoured techniques such as organic farming, extended skin fermentations, and aging exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks. Today, Claudio's wines exemplify a remarkable level of terroir expression, placing him among the elite producers in the region.
In October 2014, Fenocchio received high praise when The New York Times ranked them second in a tasting of 2010 Barolos, trailing only Elio Altare and surpassing Elio Grasso, Massolino, and Vietti. Presently, Claudio oversees 14 hectares of vineyards across Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, and, of course, the prized Bussia area in Monforte. The estate's total annual production averages around 8,000 cases.
