"The pretty and faintly perfumed 2019 Blanco de Sierra de Toloño has purity and freshness, and it's subtle and delicate. It fermented after going through a cold soak and was kept with lees in stainless steel. It has moderate alcohol and very good freshness, with a transparency and symmetry I like. 9,000 bottles were filled in March 2020. I'm starting to love 2019..."

Sierra de Tolono

Nestled high in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño in Rioja Alavesa, Sandra Bravo tends to some of the region's oldest and highest-altitude vineyards. Cultivating Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura, and a touch of Graciano, she operates a small winery in Villabuena de Álava. Employing steel, amphorae, and aged wood, this young winemaker skillfully translates the rugged mountain landscape into wines that are both pure and expressive. Bravo harvests a variety of grapes from micro-terroirs spread across numerous small plots, weaving together a fresh and beautiful representation of the area. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, ‘I studied Engineering and Enology in Rioja, then gained experience in wineries across Bordeaux, Tuscany, New Zealand, and California. After spending seven years in Priorat upon returning to Spain, I developed an open perspective on crafting distinct wines back in my homeland. Priorat profoundly influenced me to create artisanal wines, emphasizing the significance of the vineyard—the vineyard with soul.’ ‘Returning to Rioja in 2012, I resolved to craft wines that honor the gifts of the vineyard, always seeking freshness. I fell in love with Rioja Alavesa—the calcareous soil, small plots, Mediterranean herbs, and the constant North wind at high altitudes (right on the mountain that inspired the name of my project: Sierra de Toloño)... it was perfect!’
