Edge Wines was founded by Ray Signorello, an experienced vintner and winemaker from Napa, along with a group of partners, each with diverse backgrounds in fields such as travel, mining, and finance. They introduced their first commercial vintage in 2001.
Although Ray was born in California, he grew up in Vancouver, Canada, as his father worked in the mining industry. Ray is actively involved in multiple wine projects, with his primary winery being Signorello Estate, situated in the southern part of the Silverado Trail. Apart from his association with Edge Wines, he also participates in Fuse Wines, which blends Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with various red grape varieties, and Trim Wines, which sources Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from select vineyards throughout California.
Ray has long been an avid collector of fine wines and has always sought the opinions of the general public on Napa wine. In the early 2000s, he noticed that many people felt that premium Napa Cabernets were becoming too expensive, driving wine enthusiasts away from the market. This scarcity of affordable, high-quality Napa Cabernet Sauvignon prompted him to explore the possibility of crafting a cutting-edge wine without the premium price tag, leading to the creation of Edge Wines.
With his deep connections in the Napa region's grape-growing community, Ray, along with his partners, managed to source grapes from several top-tier vineyards, primarily from the up-valley region, stretching from the Oak Knoll district in the south to Calistoga in the north. Their primary focus is on producing a single-vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, which is their exclusive wine. Their aim is to craft a classic Napa Cabernet while also appealing to those who are new to drinking red wine.
The 2005 Edge Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend that includes a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The idea behind using these two grape varieties is to add some softness with the Merlot and enhance the structure with the Cabernet Franc. They use a combination of new and used French and American oak during the 16-month aging process for the 2005 vintage. Both indigenous and cultured yeasts are employed during fermentation. In two words, the 2005 vintage can be described as soft and balanced. It may not be a heavyweight, but it offers layers of flavour and structure often associated with Napa Cabernets that are priced much higher.
At the time of this review, the total production of Edge Wines ranges between 14,000 and 16,000 cases.
