Kent Rasmussen, a native of California, participated in a foreign exchange program during high school, which placed him with a winemaking family in Germany. Captivated by the world of winemaking, he began crafting his own wine upon returning to the United States.
Driven by his passion and enjoyment of this hobby, Kent decided to elevate his grape-growing and winemaking pursuits to a professional level. He enrolled at UC Davis, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Enology. After graduation, he gained valuable knowledge and experience at esteemed wineries such as Robert Mondavi Winery, Domaine Chandon, Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery in South Africa, and Saltram's Wine Estate in Australia's Barossa Valley. In 1986, he established his own Ramsay winery.
Named after Kent's wife Celia's maiden name, Ramsay is renowned for producing high-quality wines at affordable prices. The Ramsay Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, are commonly featured by the glass in wine bars and restaurants.
Since its humble beginnings in a Carneros garage on Cuttings Wharf Road in 1986, the Ramsay winery has evolved alongside the changes in its owners' lives. Recently, this evolution involved integrating Ramsay into the portfolio of Kent's long-time business partner, 689 Cellars. In its new home at 689 Cellars, the Ramsay brand has undergone a label refresh, while maintaining its commitment to delivering exceptional value, showcasing some of the finest offerings California has.
Kent's fervour for winemaking remains unwavering. He often emphasizes the unfortunate truth about wine—that there's only one chance a year to make it.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
