In 1985, close buddies Tim Murphy, Dale Goode, and Dave Ready were engrossed in their weekly game of liar's dice when inspiration struck. That spirited evening marked the birth of their shared passion for wine, leading to the creation of Murphy-Goode—a winery founded on a simple principle: don't take life too seriously.
Initiating their winemaking journey, the trio crafted Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay from the Murphy Ranch and Murphy-Goode Vineyard in Sonoma County. As both Tim Murphy and Dale Goode served as the team's growers, they played pivotal roles in advancing Alexander Valley with innovations like wire trellising, extensive drip irrigation, and leaf pulling. Tim Murphy, acclaimed as the father of Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc, and Dale Goode shaped the winemaking landscape.
The third member, Dave Ready, assumed the role of the trio's marketer, infusing the winery with a lively persona that endures to this day. Today, Dave Ready Jr., the winemaker and son of co-founder Dave Ready, epitomizes excellence in winemaking and beyond. Apart from crafting high-quality wines sourced from California's premier vineyards, he's a drummer extraordinaire.
Raised immersed in wine appreciation by his father, Dave Jr. initially aspired to be a musician, a dream that lured him to California. However, his newfound love for wine kept him rooted. Discovering his winemaking prowess during harvests at Murphy-Goode, he honed his skills in Australia, incorporating innovative techniques upon his return. Named Assistant Winemaker in 1997, he defined the style for Liar's Dice and subsequent Murphy-Goode Zinfandels by 1998. By 2001, Dave Ready Jr. ascended to the role of Winemaker for Murphy-Goode.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
