The Producer

Bernabeleva

Bodegas Bernabeleva was founded in 1923 and is located at the foot of the Cerro de Guisando mountains and the slopes of Gredo on the Martin de Valdeiglesias just outside Madrid. All wines are produced entirely according to biodynamic principles.

In the 1920’s, a Madrid doctor - Vicente Álvarez-Villamil purchased a plot of land near Madrid to grow Garnacha (Grenache). The good doctor named the winery Bernabeleva, meaning the bear’s forest, as a homage to the Celtic carved stone bears that littered the area around the winery. In the 1930’s, Spain’s political instability put the vineyard on ice but the family managed to hold onto the land and the vines.

Finally in 2006, Vicente’s great-grandsons re-started the winery, still named Bernabeleva, to make wine from the now 80 year old vines. The label is a picture of Vicente’s daughter astride on one of the stone bears.

Winemaker Marc Isart is one of the elite in the Spanish wine scene—each year receiving impressive awards from international wine critics for his wines. He makes soulful fresh driven wines that speak to the great Chateau Rayas’ of the 80s and 90s.
