Feudo di Santa Tresa estate has around 123 acres of vineyards in the historical vine growing region of Vittoria. A careful selection of the clones and rootstocks are planted at a density of approximately 2,025 vines per acre to preserve the typicity of native varietals while realizing the full potential of this unique microclimate.
Lying close to the Mediterranean, Feudo di Santa Tresa’s vineyards benefit from cooling sea breezes. The estate’s soil consists of a layer of light, red, sandy loam (terra rossa) resting on top of a limestone base, which helps retain vital water. In order to preserve this rich terroir, only natural techniques are used to assist cultivation. While the abundant wind and scarce rainfall naturally protect against pests, infestations are further prevented through limited copper and sulfur treatments and “sexual confusion” pheromone traps. In addition, only natural fertilizers are used to avoid introducing chemicals into the topsoil. Undersoil irrigation is utilized to prevent evaporation, thereby maximizing water efficiency.
