Tasting Notes

In 1975, legendary vintner and pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the Gavilan Mountains of California’s majestic Central Coast. In the four decades since, Calera has helped establish the Central Coast as one of the New World’s most exciting wine regions, while earning acclaim as one of California’s iconic wineries.

Made from a handful of the finest vineyards on the Central Coast, this lush and vibrant Pinot Noir displays alluring layers of blackberry jam, red cassis and Bing cherry, underscored by hints of wild game and pennyroyal that add nuance and complexity to a long, focused finish.

The Producer

Calera

Calera has for generations produced some of Californias greatest Pinot Noirs. Founded by Josh Jenson who fell in love with Burgundy, picked grapes with Domaine de la Romanee Conti, worked with Dujac. He then took that knowledge and in the foothills of a mountain range then undiscovered in California, surrounded by snow capped mountains, created a winery that only a madman would create.

After returning from working in Burgundy with some of the most famous wineries, he returned searching for the perfect property to plant Pinot Noir by looking for undiscovered limestone rich sites. What he found on an old geological map was what is now internationally recognized as one of the greatest sites for Pinot Noir, worldwide. Perched on the slopes of Mount Harlan, in the Gavilan Mountains, which was a remote and rugged location that had no paved roads nor electricity and practically no running water. Jensen moved his family and they lived out of a trailer and dubbed the property Calera, after the Spanish word for 'limekiln.'
