Mayacamas Vineyards

Mayacamas Vineyards, a Californian winery nestled in the Mayacamas Mountains within the Mt. Veeder AVA of the Napa Valley, stands apart from contemporary Napa trends. Unlike the prevalent emphasis on power, weight, high alcohol levels, and extravagance, Mayacamas is renowned for its more traditional winemaking style.

Established in 1889 by German immigrant John Henry Fisher, the winery faced financial difficulties in the early 1900s, leading to a period of neglect. Legend has it that bootleggers produced wine in the old stone cellar during Prohibition. The Brandlin family owned the property in the late 1920s and 1930s.

In 1941, British chemist Jack Taylor and his wife Mary purchased the estate, giving it the name Mayacamas Vineyards. The winery changed hands in 1968 when Robert Travers and his wife Elinor took over. They expanded aging facilities, acquired neighboring land, and continually tended to vineyard cultivation.

Despite initial hesitations, Mayacamas gained international acclaim when its Cabernet Sauvignon participated in the 1976 ‘Judgment of Paris’ competition. The winery, currently owned by investor Charles Banks and family, produces around 5,000 cases annually, including 2,000 cases each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The vineyard, spanning 53 acres, also cultivates Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in smaller quantities. Mayacamas Vineyards remains a testament to enduring winemaking traditions in the evolving landscape of Napa Valley.
