Reimer Vineyards, nestled in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake's wine country, spans 22 acres. In the mid-1980s, the vineyard initially cultivated grapes using conventional methods. However, by the early 2000s, a shift to organic farming took place, extending to organic winemaking upon the winery's establishment in 2010.
Currently, the vineyard is embracing regenerative agriculture as part of its commitment to more sustainable farming practices. Unlike a specific practice, regenerative agriculture involves a combination of sustainable agricultural techniques and holistic management. At Reimer Vineyards, this approach incorporates a diverse mix of crops, including fruit trees and grapes, alongside animals that forage amidst the perennial crops.
Efforts to minimize pesticide usage, even the organic ones, are underway. Traditional wine grape varieties are being replaced with new resilient varieties developed to withstand the challenges of a changing climate. The vineyard anticipates that these holistic practices will yield not only healthier soils but also stronger plants with superior fruit, ultimately contributing to the production of even better wine.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
