"Impressive out of barrel, though flirting with a certain "jamminess" when tasted again out of bottle. Then in November 2004: this has really improved over the last couple of years and is easily the best Cantenac Brown that I have tasted. A plummy, meaty, earthy nose wafts up from the glass. Good concentration on the palate. Firm tannins, soft red berried fruit mixed with tobacco and a touch of leather. Solid, yet still harmonious. Would make an astute purchase. Drink from 2010.”

Château Siran

Chateau Siran has a history in the Medoc that dates back to 1428, making it one of the oldest estates in Margaux. The property took its name from Guilheim de Siran, the first owner of the property. Guilheim de Siran was granted the land due to his strong participation with the local church in the nearby commune of Macau.

Since then, Chateau Siran has been owned by several interesting families over the centuries, including the Toulouse Lautrec family. The owners were the grandparents of the famous French painter.

Chateau Siran has been the property of the Miailhe family since 1858, having purchased the estate from the Lautrec family. Chateau Siran has retained their artistic roots. Similar to what Chateau Mouton Rothschild does in Pauillac each year with their labels, from 1980 to 2005.

If you’re visiting Siran, be sure to ask to see the only wine cellar in Bordeaux built to withstand a nuclear explosion, or the failure of the nuclear plant in Blayais. The bomb shelter, which is really just used as a cellar to store their oldest bottles was built during the 1980’s.
