“2018 was a comparatively late, cool growing season, and the fruit sat on the vines throughout August without, disconcertingly, much happening. That’s reflected in the lowest alcohol level of the three vintages. There’s an interesting aromatic top-note that’s reminiscent of what I call Sauvignon “botanicals”, and which leads me to jokingly refer to this as—if people will forgive the lèse-majesté—our Vatan vintage. It’s taut and tangy, with the least texture for now but a lot of length, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it turn out to be the best of the three in six or seven years."
William Kelley, January 2021

Beau Rivage Cellars is a small production California wine dedicated to producing classically balanced wines using traditional, artisanal techniques. Launched in 2017 by William Kelley and Frank Ingriselli, their search for organically farmed fruit capable of attaining mature flavors at moderate degrees of alcohol led them to Clarksburg, where Chenin Blanc thrives on the banks of the Sacramento River. Even though Clarksburg Chenin may be far from California wine’s mainstream, the winemakers are thrilled by its vivid, succulent flavors.
While Chenin Blanc’s homeplace is the central Loire Valley, Beau Rivage winemaking practices follow traditional Burgundian wine-making techniques. Grapes are picked and sorted by hand; pressed; and fermented and matured in used barrels and demi-muids from some of France’s best coopers.
The winemakers have drawn inspiration from the likes of Jean-François Coche and Klaus-Peter Keller. Closer to home, Sandland’s Tegan Passalacqua and—above all—Kalin Cellar’s Terry Leighton.
