Cíes Blanco by Rodrigo Mendez 2019

Rodrigo Mendéz embodies the revolutionary spirit of Galicia, showcasing exceptional and distinctive wines. Since the mid-2000s, he has been a source of inspiration for numerous fellow wine growers in the region. Seeking to produce red wines in an area renowned for its Albariño variety, he sought advice from Raul Perez. This collaboration not only forged a deep friendship between them but also led to joint projects. Together, they craft the renowned Sketch wine, sharing its production.

Rodri's vineyards are nestled high in the mountains, surrounded by forests, creating an isolated environment that allows for organic farming without the influence of neighbouring vineyards. Forgas del Salnés derives its grapes from 7.5 hectares of vineyards, including some owned and others rented. One notable vineyard is Finca Genoveva, boasting 200-year-old vines and serving as the origin for two of Rodri's top wines: the Finca Genoveva white Albariño and a red Caiño.

Visiting this extraordinary vineyard is a truly inspiring experience, unparalleled anywhere else in the world. The vines are trained to hang over 2 meters above ground, allowing the Atlantic Ocean breeze to flow freely underneath and around them, preventing rot. Similar practices are applied to Rodri's other vineyards, some of which are located close to the ocean and shrouded in morning clouds from the sea.

Each vineyard is treated individually to preserve its authentic characteristics and terroir, with some aged in stainless steel and others in used foudres and oak barrels. While the red wines exhibit a Burgundian character, the true acclaim for this exceptional winery stems from its white Albariño vines, renowned for their incredible freshness and depth of flavours.
