Tasting Notes

"Gorgeous from the get-go, with plum sauce, cassis and violet notes streaming through, showing ample richness yet relying more on cut, while anise, black tea and chalky mineral flavors persist on the finish. A beauty in the making."

96-99 points - Wine Spectator, April 2017

"The 2016 Clos Fourtet is a blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new oak. It has a generous, well defined licorice-tinged fruit that is very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, blackberry and boysenberry fruit with that salted licorice theme continuing. This Clos Fourtet has impressive concentration, yet there is real elegance and persistence, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. Mathieu Cuvelier has overseen another outstanding Clos Fourtet. Tasted twice, with a second bottle demonstrating a tad more backbone but equally admirable."

95-97 points - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, April 2017

The Producer

Clos Fourtet

Clos Fourtet is one of the most modest properties of Saint-Emilion, located at the entrance to the village, but whose wines are among the most distinguished. It is an old fort or ‘camp fortet’ situated above the mediaeval city. Its single vineyard, located on the highest slopes of the west of Saint-Emilion, is surrounded by small low walls.

It has belonged to the Cuvelier family since 2001, with Philippe and his son Matthieu striving for a constant search for excellence and purity. They manage the vineyard employing organic and biodynamic principles.

Clos Fourtet received the Premier Grand Cru Classé classification in 1955. It retains this distinction to this day, a testament to the merit among the elite.

The Clos Fourtet vineyard consists of 18.5 hectares of vines, established on a clay-limestone plateau and whose grape varieties are 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The property produces a Second wine, Closerie de Fourtet.
