Tasting Notes

This is a pretty unique story, but this is one of those business deals that happen purely from being at the right place at the right time. Lalou Bize Leroy has many sources for her maison, but in the Côte de Nuits she principally worked through one courtier and four different sources for wines. This courtier died during COVID, and with his death, some of the vineyard sources decided to walk away from their partnership to sell her old wines from their cellars. Through our partners in Burgundy, we were able to source some of these wines that had been destined for her cellar at essentially the same price as she would have paid, but without the astronomic markup she charged. I tasted both the 2003 and 2005 Clos Vougeot and both are sensational bottles. By no means am I saying they are Domaine Leroy (very different from their negociant labelled as Maison Leroy) quality, but they are sensational opportunities to drink great back vintage Burgundy at a fraction of what they cost in the open market now, and remember, they were selected by Lalou originally to go to the Maison cellar!
