Colheita

by Dona Matilde 2004

Producer : Dona Matilde

Region : Douro (Portugal), Portugal (Portugal)

Bottle Per Case : 6 x 750 ml

Tasting Notes

Colheita is a Portuguese term that translates directly as "Vintage", but is really used to identify a Tawny Port which is derived from a single vintage. Colheita ports are a bit rare, as they are produced in smaller quantities than many other styles of Vintage or Tawny Ports. Harvested in 2004, aged in wood for 8 years until 2012 when it was bottled, this is an exceptional Tawny Port for the money. Intense, dried red fruits, caramel, toasted nutty - great length! Once opened, the bottle can be kept for up to 3 months.

The Producer

Dona Matilde

Dona Matilde is one of the oldest and most renowned properties in the Douro region. Located beside the beautiful road between Régua and Pinhão, alongside the river, the farm is recorded in the legendary maps of Barão de Forrester. The property was acquired in 1927 from Moreira de Barros, the great wine entrepreneur who founded the Barros Wine Group. Manoel Moreira de Barros transformed the quinta by planting new vineyards, renovating the house and building extensive gardens, among other projects.

The project Quinta Dona Matilde was born in 2007 but with the same terroir and knowledge of generations. The Quinta Dona Matilde had been acquired by Manoel Moreira de Barros in 1927 who made significant property improvements. In addition to the planting of new vineyards, the house was built and also the gardens. In honour of his wife, Manoel de Barros renamed the property, Dona Matilde.

In 2006, the Barros family sold the Barros Goup, and with it Dona Matilde. A few months later, without Douro, Manuel ngelo Barros, grandson of Manoel Moreira de Barros unhappy to see the quinta outside of family hands, managed to buy it back. Quinta Dona Matilde returned to the family at the end of 2006.
