Bottle Per Case : 12 x 750 ml
"Deep ruby. Spicy red and dark berries on the perfumed nose, with hints of licorice and dried flowers adding complexity. Sappy black raspberry and floral pastille flavors spread out and gain sweetness with air. Combines richness and vivacity smoothly, finishing with gentle tannic grip, very good persistence and an echo of fresh flowers."

For over five centuries, dating back to 1481, the Chave family has been cultivating wine in the northern Rhône region. Currently led by Gérard and his son Jean-Louis, the family boasts an impressive 16 generations of uninterrupted commitment to crafting some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne wines globally. Jean-Louis, joining his father in 1992 after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Connecticut and earning a degree in oenology at Davis, played a pivotal role in revitalizing the family's original estate in Saint-Joseph. This estate had been abandoned in the early 1900s due to the devastating impact of phylloxera on the region's vineyards.
The artistry of Chave's Hermitage lies in their exceptional blending skills, a meticulous process that is renewed each season. The Hermitage Rouge consistently relies on Syrah from the Bessards Vineyard, known for its steep, granitic slopes. The Blanc, while varying in components, is anchored by old vines Marsanne from the Péléat vineyard, with a touch of Roussanne in the final blend.
Chave Hermitage wines, characterized by their longevity and remarkable qualities of purity, elegance, power, and finesse, epitomize winemaking at its peak. In exceptional years, the Chave family releases the ultra-rare ‘Cuvée Cathelin,’ a variation of their Hermitage, maintaining the same lieux-dits but in different proportions.
Jean-Louis Chave Selections, the family's négociant line, provides a more accessible entry to the Chave wine experience. Wines like 'Mon Coeur' Côtes-du-Rhône and ‘Silène’ Crozes-Hermitage showcase the family's commitment to quality, even at the entry level. The Chave family's winemaking methods include traditional farming, low yields, prioritizing full ripeness, and minimizing manipulation—a meticulous approach maintained over five centuries, resulting in venerable expressions of the purest northern Rhône terroir.
