Tasting Notes

"Henry of Pelham’s sparkling wine program continues to move from strength to strength, with the focal point being this rich and refreshing estate-grown vintage bubbly. Refined toasty and nutty notes add interest to the core of lemony and citrussy fruit flavours. This is balanced and complete, with a long finish. Drink now to 2025."

94 Points - Christopher Waters, Waters on Wine, The Globe and Mail, December 2020

"With its lovely aromatics in the classic Blanc de Blancs spectrum, Henry of Pelham delivers yet another superb traditional method sparkling chardonnay in the top class in Canada. Such delicate brioche, almonds, citrus and white flower aromatics make this irresistible off the top, while the palate is still so vibrant and fresh, barely evolved, with pitch perfect balance and excellent length. A really superb bottle, you won't find much better from anywhere in the world, including Champagne, at this price. Drink or hold a decade or more."

93 Points - John Szabo, Wine Align, October 2020

"A profusion of mousse forms in the glass when poured followed by seemingly endless streams of fine-bead bubbles winding their way from the bottom of the glass to the top amidst glorious aromas of leesy yeast, crisp Granny Smith apple and wisps of buttered toast and baking brioche. This bathes the palate with tang-laden pizzazz of lemon curd and white grapefruit adorned with ripe pear. It finishes clean, crisp and refreshing. There’s plenty of time for this to mature and evolve between now and 2025 when it’s ten years of age. I’d suggest a multiple purchase careful cellaring and opening a bottle now and trying another whenever the urge arises, but keeping at least one bottle until 2025 reaping the rewards of patience and wine maturity."

The Producer

Henry Of Pelham

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery is an Ontario winery that released their first vintage in 1988. The namesake of the winery, Henry (Smith) of Pelham was an early settler in Upper Canada’s Niagara Peninsula. His father Nicholas, the first settler, was Pennsylvania Dutch and a United Empire Loyalist who sided with the crown during the American Revolution of 1776. We named the winery Henry of Pelham after great-great-great grandpa’s son, Henry, who we think had a pretty dry sense of humour, nicknaming himself “Henry of Pelham” after a British Prime Minister. He was quite the entrepreneur, building an inn and tavern on the property and operating a toll road. He raised sheep. And grew grapes—some of the first to be planted in Canada. Our tasting room and wine store are in Henry’s carriage house. In 1984, when our parents decided to replace Henry’s concord and Niagara grapevines with old world vinifera grapes, the Niagara wine scene hardly existed and there were a lot of naysayers—but we had done our homework. Heat scans proved we had the right conditions, and we bettered our chances by contouring the hills and installing drainage. At the time, we were one of only a few Niagara wineries to make premium wines from our own grapes.
