“Bright purple-ruby. Aromas and flavors of dark plum, black cherry and sweet spices are complemented by a strong balsamic note. Bright and juicy, with a lovely mineral tang and harmonious acidity lifting the steely red fruit flavors and extending them through a long floral finish. Outstanding wine.” – Ian d’Agata, Vinous Media, Dec 2016

The Titolo Tower is a house on the outskirts of Barile, in the North of Basilicata, immersed between vineyard and olive groves that have been tended to for 4 generations. The story of the Fucci Family, over the last few years, is one of a prestigious wine: Titolo, named after the local volcanic territory in the region.

“Titolo has been the best Aglianico del Vulture for many years now, and is really one of Italy’s better red wines.” – Ian D’Agata, Vinous

“Titolo is the perfect benchmark wine for Aglianico ageability.” – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Seems like the wine critics agree, this is some of the best Aglianico available anywhere.

My favourite expressions of the Aglianico grape tend to be those that come from volcanic soil. It is true that much of Southern Italy, and certainly the best wine regions are mostly volcanic, but that does not mean that when you find a great one such as the Titolo, you shouldn’t jump all over it. My gut tells me that this wine will disappear quickly.

Elena grew up in the house situated on the vineyard of this wine. It continues with Elena’s passion to study oenology, and her deep desire to want to make something special out of the vineyard she holds dear to her heart. In 2000, “Titolo” was born, first with a consulting oenologist, and then in 2004, with Elena fully at the helm. Titolo is a deep, rich, full bodied, and full flavoured wine, grown on the oldest vineyards on Mount Vulture in the Basilicata region of Italy, where the majority of the vines are 55-60 years old, and some are as old as 70 years. It is grown on a volcanic lava and ash mix, known locally as “pozzolana” at an altitude of 600m ASL.

Just because we are on the subject of icons, there are exactly 24 bottles remaining of 2011 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino, (see below).

There are also a few cases of Sfursat Ca Rizzieri.  I tasted this wine last week at Prowein, and as always, it was right there with my favourite wines that i tasted at the whole show.

Happy Sunday everyone!
