PUTEUS SALICE SALENTINO RISERVA DOC BY MOCAVERO 2011

“Tiny little appellation in the heel of the boot of Italy producing some amazing wines.”

Case Price : CA$263.40

Winery : Mocavero

Wine Region : Italy (Italy), Puglia (Italy)

Bottle Per Case : 12 x 750 ml

A bold wine with unique expressions of vanilla, espresso, black fruit and spice. The earthy bouquet includes a strong hint of espresso and vanilla, with fruit taking the background. An older vintage and good fermentation allows this to be a big and weighty wine with unique characteristics. Excellent with roast meat, wild fowl, spicy dishes and cured meats.

Every year, Mocavero’s Puteus Salice Salento Riserva creates a stir when it comes in to the country. Those that know this wine, love this wine and they get really excited when it arrives. We literally take all the allocation that Mocavera will give us in every vintage. We have been waiting 6 months for the 2011 to arrive, but now it is here, so, for those of you that want a case, or a few, now is the time to ensure you get them.

The bottom of the heel of the boot which is Italy kind of feels like you are at the end of the world. Looking over that perfect Mediterranean blue can be mesmerizing. The vines that grow here have to be some of the happiest vines anywhere. My theory is that happy vines tend to make great wines. There is great mineral in the soil as the soil is volcanic, warm sunny days, cool nights and an almost constant breeze make for powerful wines that maintain their freshness and have the ability to age a good long time. The fact the price is $21.95/bottle is just a bonus.

Pignataro’s Nero di Troia arrived alongside the Puteus. This is another steal from Puglia, but the Nero di Troia tends to drink better younger and lacks the power of the Salice Salento Riserva. If you are looking for a perfect wine to drink now, for bbq’s, cottage etc, this is the right wine. Oh yeah, i should probably mention, this wine is only $16.95/bottle, it comes in 6-packs and won a gold medal at Berlin’s prestigious wine competition.

When you think Puglia, it is hard not to think Primitivo. For those that don’t know, Primitivo is Italian for Zinfandel. The more interesting thing about that is that everyone seems to know about Zinfandel, but many fewer people are aware of Primitivo. Primitivo was around long before they started to call it Zinfandel in the States. I guess we should thank the Americans and their marketing prowess for really put this grape varietal on the map. The 2014 Primitivo Critera by Schola Sarmenti delivers a whole lot of wine, but is softer and fruitier than the Puteus.

Whether you buy 1 of these wines, or all 3 of them, you will be delighted with your purchase as all of these wines deliver a ton of value.
