“This enticingly fragrant wine offers scents of white spring flower, apple, ginger and flint. On the elegantly structured palate, radiant acidity underscores crisp apple, Bosc pear, white peach and lemon drop, while a salty mineral note closes the tangy finish… Drink through 2024.”

Well, we are going to have to do another, “Awesome White Wine Day.” Today, is all about awesome white wines from Italy. To call a spade a spade, i was not aware Soave could be this good, or have such long aging potential, until we went to visit with Claudio Gini and sat in the cellar and drank wines going back 3 or 4 DECADES. The wines were out of this world.

It seems as though the large Soave producers have blanketed North America with entry level Soave for so long that most of us, myself included, were not aware that Soave Classico DOC produces some of the best white wines available out of Italy and the world for that matter.

The classico zone was first delineated by Veneto authorities in 1927 and originally encompassed 2,720 acres (1,100 ha) of hillside vineyards within the Soave zone. Today, the use of the specification “Classico” with the designation “Soave” is reserved for the product made from grapes harvested from the hillside vineyards around the municipalities of Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone in the original and oldest classic “zone” of Verona. See the picture above of Gini’s vineyards if you are wondering what this looks like.

It should be said that Soave and Chianti were the first zones in Italy (in 1931) to be recognized by Royal Decree as having the potential for producing fine wines.

In other words, Soave Classico and Soave Cru wines are some of the most important in Italy and Gini is likely the best producer there is.

When i said, awesome white wine day, i meant it. Not only do we have the single vineyard La Frosca Soave Classico, but we also have Gini’s entry level Soave Classico. This wine is awfully similar to the La Frosca, stunning wine, but the Soave Classico will drink well younger than the La Frosca. It also happens to be $10 bottle cheaper. If you can afford it, you will really want to own a case of each of these.

Ahh, Schiopetto’s 2014 Friulano. How can you go wrong with a wine that was given the title: Italy’s Best White Wine,” by Gambero Rosso in 2016. Oh yeah, it also received a 95 point score and the Grande Vino award from Slow Wines. There is not a lot left of this wine, so you might want to act fast on this one.

If you love white wine, you will want a case of all 3 of these as you will be over the moon with each one. Oh yeah, if you want to understand why these wines are so remarkably different coming from very close together, watch the video on terroir down below.

The weekend is almost here. Enjoy the day!
