Tasting Notes

Steve Kistler – yes, that Kistler – stepped away from his namesake brand at the end of 2017, having founded Occidental Vineyards in 2011 as his own side-project that focused on Pinot Noir. Steve had already begun planting vineyards in West Sonoma Coast’s Bodega, Occidental and Freestone regions using Pinot Noir clones that he propagated from Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru clippings. And what was then seen as progression was, as we see it now, makings of his true magnum opus in the development and expression of these breathtaking sites through the Occidental wines. The 2017 Freestone-Occidental is a vibrant, perfumed wine with a chiseled red-fruit character that is typical of the wines from the Bodega Headlands and Bodega Ridge properties. The 2017 Freestone-Occidental offers a superb balance of primary red fruits and saline elements. It conveys outstanding energy, precision and lift in the mouth and finishes vibrant and long with discreet tannins.

The Producer

Occidental

Steve Kistler, the visionary winemaker behind Occidental Wines, began his extraordinary journey in the realm of viticulture and winemaking more than four decades ago. His fascination with coastal vineyards was sparked during his time at Ridge Vineyards. It was there, in 1975 during his initial harvest, that he first experienced the distinctive character of coastal terroir. The Occidental Vineyard, situated on the western edge near Sebastopol, stole his heart and became the driving force behind his quest to produce world-class pinot noir from California's coastal ridges.

In 1995, Steve established the Occidental Vineyard on Taylor Lane, with a breathtaking view of the Pacific, where he felt a connection to his earlier days at Ridge. This marked the commencement of Occidental's remarkable journey, pushing the boundaries of pinot noir viticulture farther west along the Sonoma Coast. Steve's commitment to harnessing the cool coastal influence and his profound respect for Burgundian winemaking principles have played a pivotal role in Occidental's success.

A noteworthy facet of Occidental's legacy is the involvement of Steve's daughter, Catherine Kistler, who joined the winery in 2017. A Harvard graduate with a solid foundation in classics and history, Catherine chose to follow in her father's footsteps. She immersed herself in the world of wine, completing wine certification courses and acquiring expertise in viticulture. Catherine's passion for the vineyards and her dedication to crafting exceptional pinot noir alongside her father exemplify the family's commitment to the enduring success of Occidental. Together, they continue to produce wines that capture the essence of California's coastal terroir, ensuring that Steve's legacy will thrive for generations to come.
