Domaine Thenard
Domaine Baron Thénard is a family owned winery, based in Givry in the ‘Côte Chalonnaise’ sub region of Burgundy. The Thénard family has owned vineyards (especially in Givry) since 1760, but they are particularly well known as one of the major owners of a parcel of the famous ‘Le Montrachet’.
Two substantial parcels total 1.84 Ha. Paul, second baron Thénard purchased the vineyard in 1873 and the holding has been kept intact by the family since then. The average age of the Chardonnay vines planted in Le Montrachet Grand Cru is 35 years and they are all situated in the ‘Chassagne’ part of the vineyard.
The wine is produced in a very traditional way and they require multiple years to reveal their true potential. The wine is capable of aging for 15 years or more. Domaine Baron Thénard used to sell virtually all of their wines to the négociant Roland Remoissenet, but at present the estate uses its own label.
Besides Le Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Baron Thénard also produces Corton ‘Clos du Roi’ Grand Cru and Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, both from Pinot Noir grapes. Furthermore, the estate owns vineyards in Chassagne Montrachet, Givry and Pernand-Vergelesses. The domaine is currently run by Jean-Baptiste Bordeaux Montrieux, a member of the Thénard family (His grandmother was a Thénard).
