"The 2016 Il Drago e le 8 Colombe (a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Sagrantino) offers savory earthy sensations that come in part from the Sangiovese and in part from the Sagrantino grape. Those distinctive aromas are softened to a great extent by the Merlot, especially in a classic vintage such as this that allows for each separate variety to show its best side and uniqueness. The bouquet delivers some raw cherry and cassis, but you mostly get intense aromas of tobacco and spice. Pair it with an oven-broiled steak and potatoes."

"Crushed raspberry, blueberry, lavender, anise and a hint of cumin can all be found in the bouquet of the 2016 Il Drago e le Otto Colombe as it unfolds in the glass, taking on notes of crushed stone and dusty florals. Silky textures flood the palate with fresh wild berry fruit, guided by brisk acids and hints of subtle spice, coming across as more feminine than I had expected yet truly enjoyable. It finishes long, showing the structure I was missing on the palate, as its primary fruits slowly pull back to reveal a wall of fine tannin. This blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Sagrantino is exciting to taste now, but should be even better in a few years’ time."
