"The 2021 La Calera del Escaramujo, from ungrafted and dry-farmed old vines (like all their reds), is a field blend of Monastrell that feels more austere and serious, in need of time in bottle or, if you open it any time soon, time in a decanter or the glass. It's shy, reticent and subtle and slowly reveals notes of violets and lilies, wet chalk and aromatic Mediterranean herbs, nuanced and elegant. This 2021 was still matured in 600-liter barrels, but in future years, they will use 1,500-liter foudres. And in 2023, they didn't use any barrels; they have enough tannins from the fruit even without a post-fermentative maceration, and they don't need more tannins from the wood. The palate has abundant, fine-grained, chalky tannins and has a dry, tasty finish with a salty twist. This is a very special plot for them, one they had to recover; it has old roots, but the plant was very damaged so they were very careful; and they use it to plant new vineyards. It's a plot that has exceeded their expectations, but yields are very low; they don't think they'll ever get more than 2,500 liters from two hectares. In 2021, they produced 1,700 bottles that were filled in February 2023. It should benefit from a little more time in bottle."
