When Jose and Maxi Toso established Huarpe, their goal was to pay tribute to their family's heritage and the rich history of Mendoza, all while showcasing the distinctive characteristics of their terroir. Descendants of Pascual Toso, who initiated winemaking in Mendoza during the late 1800s, they named their winery Huarpe in honour of the native people of Agrelo.
Winemaker José Hernández Toso pursued studies in Viticulture and Oenology in Germany, subsequently working at the Graf Adelmann Winery in Baden and later at J. Hofstaetter in Alto Adige, Italy. Currently serving as the Chief Winemaker at Luigi Bosca, José's brother, Maximiliano Hernández Toso, complements him perfectly at Huarpe.
Huarpe Winery encompasses three distinct brands, each occupying its own niche. Lancatay, translating to 'at the foothills of the Andes,' offers straightforward yet delightful entry-level wines crafted using a blend of French oak and stainless steel. Taymente, meaning 'roots of eternal life,' stands as the flagship brand, featuring varietally-labeled wines made from estate fruit, with a combination of American and French oak to reflect the essence of Agrelo.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
