Tasting Notes

A blend of Grenache and Syrah, a richly textured powerhouse filled with berry liqueurs, spiced plum, and liquorice, and it carries itself extremely well. The palate is medium to full-bodied and dense, but has incredible high-toned notes and fresh waves of acidity keep the wine from tiring your palate.

This rich-but-fresh southern Rhône red is blend is of about 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah from vines substantially grown in Violès on Le Plan de Dieu supplemented by some from Visan. Soils are a mixture of limestone and blue clay. Average age of the vine, a very heartening 30 to 50 years. Vines are hand-harvested before being sorted in both vineyard and cellar. Ruby in colour. Meaty and very much more an old-vine Grenache than a generic Côtes du Rhône. It has an admirable freshness as well as all a rich, ripe but subtle fruit with a little fine tannin on the finish.

The Producer

Michel et Stéphane Ogier

The Ogier family was making more money growing fruit in those days! By 1987, they were bottling and selling their entire harvest. From that point forward, they never looked back! In 1998, the name of the domaine was changed to Michel & Stephane Ogier, announcing the arrival and participation of Stephane Ogier, who joined his father in the family business. Before devoting himself to the estate full-time, Stephane Ogier spent time learning about wine by working in Beaune and South Africa. In 2003, they completely renovated their cellars and added new, temperature controlled, fermentation vats. Domaine Michel & Stephane Ogier Cote Rotie, like many Cote Rotie properties, is a completely family run estate. Today, Stephane Ogier is responsible for many of the domaine’s decisions to produce Ogier Cote Rotie. Today Stéphane Ogier is one of the northern Rhône Valley’s most distinguished producers who sells his best wines for up to $650 a bottle.
