Tasting Notes

"My favorite vintage of this cuvee to date, the 2012Nostre Pais Costieres de Nimes comes from the southern, cooler part of the appellation and was bottled in June of this year. A blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and the balance Carignan and Cinsault, it was fermented with 25-50% whole clusters and aged half in 1-2 year old demi-muids and half in concrete tanks. Gorgeous black raspberry, cassis, licorice, wild herbs and crushed flowers all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, seamless and thrillingly pure 2012. Possessing fantastic complexity, freshness and textured, it’s an incredible wine from this often overlook appellation. Drink it over the coming 3-5 years."

The Producer

Michel Gassier

Michel Gassier stands as a highly respected, family-owned winery situated in the Costières de Nîmes region within the southern Rhône Valley. Renowned for its Château de Nages wines, crafted from the heart of the family estate, the winery also offers a diverse selection of wines under the Michel Gassier label.

These additional wines originate from approximately 100 hectares (250 acres) of extra vineyards. These include plots acquired by Cristina and Michel Gassier before inheriting Château de Nages, along with a 50-hectare (125-acre) estate in Bech, located in the southern part of the appellation, acquired in 2012.

Situated amidst the Camargue's forests and marshes, the lower part of this site features a shallow loamy topsoil that enables the vines to reach the chalky bedrock. This unique soil composition is believed to impart acidity and minerality to the final wines, along with areas of yellow sand. At the higher elevation of the site, a pebbly topsoil covers iron-rich sandstone.

The diverse topsoil and underlying layers contribute to the cultivation of a broad array of grape varieties. Some areas, replanted densely with Grenache (using cuttings from old Châteauneuf-du-Pape plants), are maintained as bush vines like the older blocks, precluding the possibility of mechanized operations in the future.

In addition to the Château de Nages wines, the winery produces wines under the Lou Coucardié, Nostre Pais, and Les Cépages de Michel Gassier lines. Furthermore, wines labeled under Cercius are created in collaboration with winemaking consultant Philippe Cambie and U.S. importer Eric Solomon.
