Since 1968, Plantagenet has remained a family-owned enterprise. Tony Smith, with a pioneering spirit, laid the foundation for the first Great Southern vineyards. The legacy continued with 'Lionel Samson Sadleir's Group,' the oldest family business in Western Australia, now under the stewardship of Tom Wisdom, a 6th generation descendant of Lionel Samson, and his wife Jo. They are dedicated to preserving the brand within the Samson family and enhancing its legacy.
Tom and Jo Wisdom envision crafting wines of provenance and distinction that authentically showcase the remarkable potential of the Great Southern wine region.
In 1968, using a small inheritance, Tony Smith purchased a farm named Bouverie in the Plantagenet Shire (named after his mother's maiden name). Here, he planted the seeds for Plantagenet's future by cultivating Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The fruits of these efforts, harvested in 1974, resulted in some of the most highly acclaimed and sought-after wines nationally and internationally.
Recognizing the exciting potential of the wines, Smith converted a local apple packing shed into a winery. He focused on creating tight and lean Shiraz with the regional spiciness characteristic of the area and full-bodied Cabernet. Embracing the cool climate of the Great Southern, Smith expanded the vineyard with additional varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.
Although Tony Smith passed away in November 2021, his legacy endures in the vineyards and the Great Southern Region he proudly called home.
