Tasting Notes

"The raw meatiness of the monastrell variety pops out of the glass here. Brambles, heather, charcuterie, beetroot and bracken are all in play. Chewy and very spicy, this trades in deep flavors of undergrowth, encased in mouth-puckering tannins. Luckily, the wood is played out very succinctly, and this ends with acid kick and finesse."

The Producer

Bodegas Antonio Candela

Bodegas Antonio Candela is in an obscure and somewhat overlooked corner of southeastern Spain known as Yecla. Known by the Romans and the Moors, the area has known grapevines for over 2,000 years, and even today, wine is intrinsic to daily life. Fast-forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, the region became known for high-volume blended wines consumed by locals and little else.

Thankfully, a dedicated group of vignerons, including winemaker Antonio Candela, demonstrate that Spain's Levante is capable of much more – no easy feat - considering the desert conditions and harsh 'lunar-like' landscape. In many ways, the terroir in Yecla is quite similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, except the high altitude offers a reprieve from the stifling heat. These vines must dig deep roots to find water while staving off the intense Mediterranean sunshine.
