"A rich yet fresh nose of blackberries, black pepper, figs, violets and cream chocolate, following through to a fresh, full-bodied and flavorful palate with firm but silky tannins and a spicy finish. A successful blend of monastrell and syrah."

Bodegas Antonio Candela

Bodegas Antonio Candela is in an obscure and somewhat overlooked corner of southeastern Spain known as Yecla. Known by the Romans and the Moors, the area has known grapevines for over 2,000 years, and even today, wine is intrinsic to daily life. Fast-forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, the region became known for high-volume blended wines consumed by locals and little else.

Thankfully, a dedicated group of vignerons, including winemaker Antonio Candela, demonstrate that Spain's Levante is capable of much more – no easy feat - considering the desert conditions and harsh 'lunar-like' landscape. In many ways, the terroir in Yecla is quite similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, except the high altitude offers a reprieve from the stifling heat. These vines must dig deep roots to find water while staving off the intense Mediterranean sunshine.
