Tasting Notes

In a prime Medoc location in between Lynch-Bages and a plot of Château Lafitte is where you'll find Chateau Julia. Sophie Martin carefully tends her plot dominated by Merlot. Farming, family and artistry are key aspects to this magnificent and elegant Pauillac. Sustainable viticulture. Traditional hand picking. Ageing is for 12 in oak barrel (1/3rd is new). Production is limited to less than 4,000 bottles.

Why is Pauillac arguably the single most elite zip code in Bordeaux? The village’s top wines immediately command top dollar upon release and for many collectors, they represent the global benchmark for powerful, sublime red wine. Today, this historically fascinating region is fuelled by billionaire- and corporation-run chateaux with infinite foreign investment, resulting in the critical endangerment of genuine, small-production Pauillac growers. Until recently, we thought only one remained: Château Chantecler, whose single hectare of vines made them one of the region’s tiniest producers. In regards to their ongoing quest to remain a small, independent estate while producing wines on par with the exorbitantly priced titans that surround them, we believed them to be the “last man standing.” And then, out of the blue, Château Julia stepped into the light with an unpresuming grin. Operated by trailblazer Sophie Martin, this emergent, organic-minded estate owns just two-thirds of one hectare wedged between some of the most valuable vine real estate on earth: First Growth Latour and Fifth Growth Lynch-Bages. The result is a lush, soulful, exceptionally pure Bordeaux that undoubtedly is among the finest wines we’ve ever found in Pauillac.

The Producer

Chateau Julia

Château Julia was founded in 2009 on 2 AOCs: Pauillac and Haut-Médoc - 0.62 ha in Pauillac between Château Lynch Bages and Château Latour. On 6 small parcels, they produce an exceptional wine with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvested and sorted by hand, the grapes are transported to the winery in Saint Laurent Médoc. They are vinified in the Médoc tradition, then the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.
