Mount Pleasant Winery

With over 150 years of winemaking excellence, Mount Pleasant Estates epitomizes the ideal Missouri winery. As the oldest winery in the Augusta Appellation, Mount Pleasant's extensive history reflects Missouri's enduring impact on the global wine industry.

Founded in 1859 by German brothers George and Frederick Muench, Mount Pleasant Winery emerged as a commercial wine business. The brothers constructed cellars in 1881, utilizing local wood and limestone. These historic cellars continue to age Mount Pleasant's estate-bottled wines and acclaimed Augusta Ports. The Muench brothers shipped barrels of wine to Chicago during the late 19th century, spreading the winery's influence worldwide.

Prohibition in 1920 forced the winery to shutter, resulting in the destruction of wine and equipment, and the burning of vineyards. Not until 1966, when Lucian Dressel and his wife Eva purchased the property, did Mount Pleasant reemerge as a winery. They revitalized the vineyards with self-rooted vines and classic grafted European varieties, transforming Mount Pleasant into a premier destination.

In 1980, Augusta attained distinction as the inaugural government-appointed wine-growing district, marking the birth of the Augusta Appellation—the first American Viticultural Area (AVA).

The Dressel family maintained ownership until 1992 when Chuck Dressel's family acquired the winery from Uncle Lucian Dressel. In 2021, the Hoffmann Family of Companies purchased and meticulously restored Mount Pleasant to its original colors and prestige.
