Farming runs deep in Paul Hobbs' veins. Growing up as one of eleven children on a family-operated orchard in upstate New York, he gained a strong work ethic early on. His daily routine involved planting, harvesting crops, and selling them at farmers markets before heading to school each morning.
Under the guidance of his father, these family activities became Paul's introduction to terroir. Sampling the same variety of apples grown in different orchards left a lasting impression on him, sparking a commitment to a vineyard-specific approach to winemaking.
Paul earned a Master's degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis. Eventually, he helped his father fulfill a lifelong dream by transforming part of their family orchard into a vineyard.
In 1998, Paul realized his own dream by founding the Katherine Lindsay Estate in Sebastopol, California, named after his great-grandmother. This vineyard pays homage to Paul's roots on the family farm in New York and serves as a perpetual source of inspiration. Since the inaugural harvest in 2003, Paul has continuously expanded the winery's vineyard presence, now spanning eight sites in premier appellations for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Over the years, Paul has gained renown for his ability to identify and nurture both new and historic vineyards—a skill rooted in his agrarian upbringing. With each vintage, he deepens his understanding of the estate vineyards and their expression in the bottle. Fusing an innovative approach with meticulous attention to detail, Paul remains at the forefront of farming and winemaking initiatives at Paul Hobbs Winery today.
