Rijk’s is located in the quaint town of Tulbach, situated 120km northeast of Cape Town and 90km east of the Atlantic coast, in an area with a Mediterranean climate. Steeped in history, the charming Church Street boasts 32 national monuments. The valley is surrounded by the majestic Winterhoek, Saronsberg, and Witzenberg mountains, often adorned with snow in winter. The cold winters, featuring rain and snow, and the very dry summers, accompanied by fresh south-easterly winds, contribute to maintaining the health and disease-free status of the vineyards. The mountains also create cool summer nights.
A connoisseur of fine food and a collector of excellent wines, Neville Dorrington had devoted over two decades to working in Cape Town. In 1996, Neville and his family made the decision to embrace country life, choosing to cultivate and produce their own wine. Falling in love with the Tulbagh valley, they stumbled upon 137 hectares of untouched soil that had never been cultivated. The slopes faced in all directions – north, south, east, and west. An analysis of the vertical shale soils revealed the potential for producing low-yielding, high-quality grapes. Upon accepting the offer to purchase, the Rijks vineyard was established.
In 2011, Rijk’s made the strategic decision to focus on the grape varieties best suited to their vineyard and soil – Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, and Shiraz. All other varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, were replaced. This challenging but crucial decision has proven to be valuable for the future of Rijk’s, evident in the specialized and award-winning wines they produce today.
