Quinta das Carvalhas, a historic property in the Douro Valley, boasts a rich heritage dating back to 1759. Positioned prominently along the left bank of the Douro River in Pinhão, it encompasses the entire hillside facing the river and extends to the slopes of the Torto River on the right bank.
The estate's old vines, over a century old, showcase a diverse selection of ancient indigenous Douro grape varieties. Originally owned by the Castro and Sande family in the 18th century, Carvalhas underwent changes in ownership until 1881 when it was acquired by Miguel de Sousa Guedes. Sousa Guedes, a prominent Port bottler, initiated a revitalization program to replant the vineyards and restore the quinta's reputation after the devastation caused by phylloxera.
In 1953, Manuel da Silva Reis became the proprietor of Quinta das Carvalhas, making it one of the largest estates in the Douro and a key property for Real Companhia Velha. The quinta's unique edaphoclimatic conditions, with vines at varying altitudes and sun exposures, contribute to its viticultural diversity.
The estate, stretching over 3 km along the Douro River on the left bank, stands out for its mountain viticulture. The terraced vineyards, with slopes ranging from 40% to 70%, create a picturesque landscape. Carvalhas' total area spans different altitudes, from 80 to 500 meters above sea level, offering varied conditions for producing top-quality Ports and DOC Douro wines.
In the 90s, the quinta's potential for wine production was enhanced through meticulous parcel traceability. With 134 hectares of vineyards, 74 hectares face the north quadrant, while 60 hectares face south, providing ideal conditions for crafting wines of complexity and originality.
