Pumphouse Shiraz by Backsberg 2015

Pumphouse Shiraz

by Backsberg 2015

Producer : Backsberg

Region : Paarl (South Africa), South Africa (South Africa)

Bottle Per Case : 12 x 750 ml

Food Pairing : Cured Meat, Hard Cheese, Red Meat

Tasting Notes

Blackberry, raspberry and rich mocha aromas are interlaced with subtle aniseed and vanilla tones. The use of both French and American oak creates layers of flavours, with the latter contributing sweeter vanilla characters that fill the midpalate. The palate has great weight and depth due to layers of fruit tannins, oak combinations and sheer flavour intensity.

The Producer

Backsberg

Backsberg is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Western Cape of South Africa. Michael Back is the fourth generation of the Back family to own and run the winery. He believes in producing wines that are true to their terroir and reflect the unique characteristics of the grapes. Michael's love for wine started at a young age when he would help his father in the vineyards and winery.

Alicia Rechner, the winemaker at Backsberg has a passion for producing quality wines that are expressive of the terroir. Alicia believes in minimal intervention winemaking and works closely with the vineyard team to ensure that the grapes are picked at the optimal time to produce the best wine.

Backsberg is located in the town of Paarl, situated in the Western Cape of South Africa. Paarl is known for its warm climate, which is perfect for growing grapes. The region also benefits from cool ocean breezes that help to moderate the temperature and provide the grapes with the necessary acidity.

The terroir of Backsberg Winery is unique and plays an important role in the quality of the wines produced. The vineyards are situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, and the soil is a combination of decomposed granite and sandstone. This soil type is well-drained and helps to promote healthy vine growth. The climate is warm and dry, which is perfect for ripening the grapes and producing wines with depth and complexity.
