The Producer

Quinta da Pellada

The historical roots of Quinta da Pellada extend back to 1527, when a noteworthy 80 barrels of wine were paid as royal tax. Fast forward to 1980, and Álvaro de Castro, a civil engineer, assumed ownership of the estate, reigniting a familial tradition that had lapsed for a generation. His dedication to the vineyard was absolute, drawing inspiration from his youthful experiences and recalling the wines crafted by Eng. Vilhena from the Nelas study center.

The inaugural vintage under Álvaro's stewardship emerged in 1989, marked by the establishment of Quinta de Saes. Oenological guidance was initially provided by Eng. Magalhães Coelho until his passing in 2005. Subsequently, the winery found additional support in Ataíde Semedo, a winemaker from Bairrada, and more recently, Tiago Félix. The familial connection deepened in 2001 with the official entry of Álvaro's oenology-trained daughter, Maria Castro, into the Quinta da Pellada team.

Since 2005, the quest for natural wines has intensified, guided by a profound respect for nature. The aim is to allow the distinctive character of each vineyard to shine through in the resulting wines. Notably, the recent addition of Aydogan Cift has imparted an international dimension to the winery's character.
