Big Head Red #7
The Big Head Red #7 is the first tier of the flagship Big / Bigger / Biggest range of wines, all intricate blends that best embody Andrzej's exuberant style. This year's Big Head Red takes blending to the next level, made with wines from the 2019 and 2021 vintage. Made with some whole cluster fruit and some appassimento fruit, it was an incredibly complex feat that the Big Head crew pulled off – and dubbed #7 to commemorate the 7th year that they've been making this Big range. Warm and fruity, it's smooth and lifted, juicy and fresh, absolutely gorgeous on its own and equally enjoyable with BBQ fare, pastas and fresh produce-based sauces. The Red #7 is blended the riper 2019 vintage with the tighter 2021. The fruit was quite ripe and healthy in 2019. All varieties were made using carbonic fermentation. ‘19s spent 26 months in 225L older French oak and 225L new Moldovan barrels.
"This might be my favourite example of the Big Head Red. We are now allowed to blend across vintages in a larger volume, giving us freedom to maintain a flavour profile year-to-year. The nose is fragrant, red berry fruit dominant, with herbal, smoky and toasted wood tones. There is so much going on already. The palate is dry with a fresh and ripe “juicy” quality. I am enjoying this very much. Have with anything that gives you comfort, but tomato and carb-based dishes are dancing in my head." Feb. 24, 2022 J.L.
Grape Varieties: 39% Cabernet Franc (fresh), 29% Cabernet Franc (appassimento), 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot.
Alcohol: 14% /vol
Residual Sugar: <5.6 g/L
Big Head 2019 White
After years of being asked by customers for a white counterpart to the crowd-pleasing Big Head Red, the Big Head White was born. 2019 is the very first year of this aromatic blend that drinks beautifully. It's elegant, fresh, crisp and round – you'd never know that it had 40% Gewürztraminer! We love this wine for its balance between fruit, floral and mineral notes, and for its lingering texture and elongated finish. Pair this with summer salads, or sip it poolside for ultimate enjoyment.
"There is a lot going on in our first white blend. The nose is intense, fruit forward, tropical and floral. Lychee and rose petal with pineapple, pear, and honeydew melon. A nice balance between the fruit and the floral notes, and neither is overpowering. The pallet is dry, and the fruitiness shines through with the acidity. A lot more citrus and tart fruit in the mouth than on the nose. This is easy drinking and pleasant. Definitely a summer sipper meant for sharing or having with lighter fare." (June 19th, 2020 JL)
