“It is no surprise that the CSV Riesling from Cave Spring took the top position, but it is good to know that there is consistency in this iconic Niagara Riesling resulting from some of the oldest Riesling vines in the country… Another fine vintage for Cave Spring's flagship old vine Riesling, from a vineyard planted in the late 1970s. This wine has grown more textural and layered over the years, with one factor being the transition to spontaneous fermentation, in addition to the ageing vines. Concentration and depth are excellent here; acids ripe-tart, balanced, and the palate comes across as essentially dry despite a pinch of residual sugar. Excellent length. Top notch in the category.”

“Old vines anchor this estate-grown reserve wine. It’s dry and fruity, riper and with more alcohol than the previous vintage, so more forward and accessible as a result. A mix of citrus fruit and lemon peel highlights fill the palate, with just a faint suggestion of gin-like botanical herbs.”
92 Points - Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast
Pale straw colour with aromas of white grapefruit, wet stone, anise and yellow plum over top notes of bee pollen, Key lime and fresh pastry. Off dry and medium bodied, the palate is full and creamy up front, followed by a rich, mineral texture and a riveting tension between fine-grained, saline acidity and ripe, fleshy flavours of ruby grapefruit and nectarine. The wine builds toward a very rich, persistent finish of crushed stone, tangerine and savoury herbs.

For Cave Spring Vineyard, the compounding effect of four decades of carefully considered decisions has earned the winery the reputation of a proud pioneer, brave enough to try new things, and patient enough to await the rewards revealed with every passing vintage.Their evolution was guided by the selection of the cool-climate varieties to the rigorous commitment to sustainability, the utilization of exclusively indigenous yeasts and neutral oak in the cellars, and the constant crusade for more demanding industry standards.
Recalling the joy his father and son had found tapping into their rural Italian roots to revive a small vineyard in the 1960s, John Pennachetti Sr knew that the original abandoned orchard set against the Niagara Escarpment’s limestone cliffs had the potential to be something so much more for his family. Today, more than four decades after John and his sons took a chance and planted some of Niagara’s first Riesling and Chardonnay vines on that plot of land, Cave Spring Vineyard serves as a constant reminder of the good things that can happen when the past is honoured in forging a new future.
