In 1882, Felipe Ugalde embarked on his journey in Haro by establishing what was then known as Bodegas Felipe Ugalde, a family-owned estate that he both owned and managed. This marked the beginnings of what would later evolve into Rioja Vega.
The name Rioja Vega was officially recorded in the Brand Ledger in 1921, and it has since become a successful and enduring brand with a rich trading history, spanning both domestic and international markets.
In 1983, Bodegas Rioja Vega was acquired by Grupo Príncipe de Viana, a move that aligned with the shared vision and values of both entities. The Spanish wine group, which also owns vineyards and cellars in Navarra (Finca Albret and Príncipe de Viana) and in Castilla y León (Clunia), played a pivotal role in shaping the future of Rioja Vega.
Today, Felipe Ugalde's dream continues to thrive, situated just 10 kilometers from Logroño in the region known as 'Venta del Jalón.' Rioja Vega follows the 'chateaux' concept, encompassing 70 hectares of vineyards that surround the cellars. This location, blessed with poor-nutrient soils and an Atlantic climate, imparts a distinctive character to their wines.
It's important to remember that taste is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role.
