Tasting Notes

"Farming, farming, farming. When Rosso come across this way, profumato, sfumato, evocativo...it is the essence of the land. Southerly Montalcino at elevation, taut, persuasive and meaningful, a seamless sangiovese missive. For Rosso, what is just, necessary and right."

92 Points - Michael Godel, Wine Align, June 2022

"The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino pulls you close to take in its spicy mix of wild herbs, white pepper, rosehips and zesty sour cherries. This gains a smoky sweetness the longer it sits in the glass. In textbook Voliero style, a wave of salty minerality greets you on the palate, followed by silky textures and tart wild berry fruits. It impresses with its vivacity and cheek-puckering tension, tapering off with purple-tinged florals, lightly structured and remarkably fresh. There's no rush here, as the 2020 could use a little time to unwind."

90 Points - Eric Guido, Vinous Media, November 2021

The Producer

Voliero

Andrea Cortonesi has always been a 'secret weapon' producer for us: The demand for his wines have gone through the roof in recent years. This is due to his exemplary winemaking and a string of rave reviews. Already the founder, proprietor and winemaker of the famed Uccelliera estate, in 2006 he started his own restaurant called Il Casato. It was in his capacity as restaurateur that today's label, 'Voliero' was born as the house pour. A true food-wine!

Patrons and the industry quickly took note and wanted Voliero bottles for their own cellars. Voliero wines are now sourced from higher elevation vineyards, and show a more elegant, refined side of Sangiovese. They are a wonderful contrast to the richer, more muscular wines Andrea makes at Uccelliera.

Andrea Cortonesi is undeniably one of the best producers in Montalcino. We've had the great pleasure of tasting today's wine many times over its evolution. From barrel years ago, to recently from the bottle, it has always been astounding.

This 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese and spends far less time aging in oak relative to its Brunello siblings however, it's no slouch. It has enough depth and power that it could be mistaken for a Brunello, until you see its price tag.
